There are a number of milongas (social tango dances) and practicas (less formal events where you can practice your tango) that run most days of the week in Sydney. We currently run a Milonga every Thursday in Bondi Junction & a Practica every Sunday in Paddington. See also the 'Sydney Tango Calendar' from our Links page for information of all social events in Sydney. |

We believe that it is best to begin by learning a Traditional ‘salon’ form of tango that allows students to rapidly gain the necessary skills to participate in the social tango scene (milongas). Also to gain an appreciation of the culture and essence of the 'Tango'. From there, those that choose, could go on to explore 'Nuevo' or 'Stage' styles of tango. Techniques in Beginner and Intermediate classes are based on the close embrace milonguero style as taught by Maria Plazaola & Susana Miller in 'La Academia' (Buenos Aires). This style emphasises connection and musicality. Steps are taught as small building blocks that can be pieced together by the leader to successfully navigate the floor and respond creatively to the music. Classes are taught using both an open 'practice hold', and close embrace. Students are encouraged to work in a close embrace once they are comfortable. Women’s Technique and Advanced classes will incorporate techniques across the spectrum of styles from Milonguero to Nuevo. This allows women to gain the skills necessary to follow leaders dancing various styles of tango within the social scene and also helps expand the repertoire of more advanced dancers. |

Clothes: For general classes we recommend you wear comfortable clothes that allow free leg movement. For women’s technique classes, please wear pants and also bring flat shoes or socks for any floor work. Shoes: Shoes need to be comfortable, ideally with a leather, suede or hard sole that allows you to pivot on a wooden floor. For women it is best to wear shoes with low - medium heels, that are secure on the foot and don't 'slip off'. Please Note: Tango is a dance that brings you into close physical contact with other people. Please consider their comfort by ensuring you are clean and dressed appropriately. |

Frequently Asked Questions |
|
It is always easier if you are able to come with a partner as this helps ensure more even numbers in the classes. However it is not essential to come with someone and we try to rotate partners regularly. Even if you come with a partner, we recommend that you rotate and practice dancing with other people. This helps learn correct techniques for leading & following. |
